Preseason Predictions - 2010
Using simple calculations and completely ignoring all managerial strategy and possible future trades, I fearlessly predict:
The All-Stars win the Pilgrim division in a close battle with the War Wizards. The rest of the division plays "wait for next year".
The best team in GAPL, the Human League walks away with the Liberty division, despite .500 seasons from the Reality and the Big Dogs.
It goes down to the last cycle in the Rebel division, but the edge is to the Sandlappers bearly beating out both the Marshals and the Swampfoxes.
The wild card goes to the War Wizards, who put together a tough battle with the League in Round 1 of the playoffs, before falling. The All-Stars easily dispatch South Carolina, setting up a showdown of the two best teams in GAPL. It's really too close to call, but I'll go with the numbers and claim the League win.
Pittsburgh, a barely decent team, wins the otherwise pathetic Gunter division. How can one division have three teams looking like they are rebuilding?
Meanwhile, the Stormtroopers are the overwhelming favorite in the Tumbleweed division, as they are predicted to win by 20 games. The Archdukes might be .500, and easily good enough for 2nd place.
Glengarry is the favorite in the Central division, but they will have their hands full with the Sloops. It should be an exciting battle, and perhaps a key trade can make the difference between these teams.
The wild card will also be interesting, as 82 wins is predicted to be good enough to make the playoffs. The Seals, Archdukes and Sloops could all reach that number, or fall just short. Sticking with the numbers, the Sloops are the wild card team.
Round 1 should feature a good matchup between two teams who would not make the playoffs in the Atlantic -- Glengarry and Pittsburgh. It's too close to call, by the numbers, so I'll go with Pittsburgh because I have to keep looking up how to spell Glengarry. The other playoff series should be an easy win for the Stormtroopers, but if there is one team that can lose an easy win, it's the Stormtroopers. Similarly, South Bosque should be a big favorite to win the Pacific Championship, but having failed in 8 previous attempts to advance past the second round, nothing is certain. Sticking by the numbers, South Bosque advances to the finals.
In the GAPL championship, the Human League is clearly the better team. However, the League has underperformed in short series before. Oh, they're playing the biggest chokers in GAPL, the Stormtroopers. League win in 6.
